THE PRINT SHOWS, NYC

2012-PRINT-SHOWS-NYC

I believe the strong print cycle we’re in will continue into next year, but based on my observations last week, I wonder if this trend will peak sooner than we think . . . Here’s what I saw:

  • Printsource New Yorka quieter show, you can find artwork on paper, specialists in home furnishings and kids markets. Very good and well-attended trend presentations at the Future Cafe. What looked best to me were the really large-scale patterns influenced by home furnishings of all sorts.
  • Indigoquite a shock as the overall impression was very dark, loud, clashing colors and pattern mixes, abstract, baroque, gothic.

I then did a quick run through Lord & Taylor where each contemporary and designer dept was filled with prints for transition/fall. They were not good, attractive, pleasing; it all looked very disturbing and jarring to my eye, and did not make for a good shopping experience. You know these will be copied into all kinds of moderate dresses and sportswear, and if this is what is going to reach the mass market, I fear this might be the end of a good print run.
